FAQ - Unlocking clips
/ devices
Q: What’s a EMMI box?
A:
EMMI box stands for Electrical Man Machine Interface, it's a product founded
by Motorola, but used by many phone manufacturers for testing purpose.
There are few kinds of the EMMI box, each of them representing different
functions, for unlocking, software copying, etc.
EMMI box mainly consist from a MC68332 CPU & a BIC terminal controller
43E08, and there is also added a 24C16 to keep the memory of the BIC controller.
And EMMI box plays like transfer device linking the RS232 terminal to DSC
bus, and all the operation are taken with a software namely MotoFlex.
There are 3 kinds of the design of the mobile phone from Motorola. One is
called SCI and the other one is called LINK & the final one with USB plug.
Some of the models from Motorola use the SCI design, for examples,T2688,
which is the design that commonly used by many mobile phone manufacturers.
It needs only a datacable with RS232 terminal to connect to PC to perform
the function. And for the model like V66/V60 needs USB.
But more commonly from Motorola mobile phone are used LINK, which need the
EMMI box where design by Motorola for performing the mobile phone upgrade,
testing, read & change the serial number / IMEI or software copying etc.
And those EMMI box need a cable where come with the RJ45 connector.
Q: What’s an unlocking Clip?
A:
Clip is a jargon for the engineer called the device which does not need to
work with a PC, the engineers call it a "clip".
And in the design, it represents a connector with special parts inside that
can unlock the mobile phone without using the PC & software. But the user
must know that the clip only supports the version or models of the mobile
phone at the time the software was written ie: They are not normally upgradeable
but are normally very reliable tools.
Q: What’s MCU software
A:
MCU software is the main software that the phone needs to work properly.
MCU software is from one origin (like 5110) the user cannot use on another
phone like the 6110 for example.
Changing MCU SW is useful only when it needs to upgrade the current software
with a newer one that has fixed bugs or added some new functions. And the
user can overwrite MCU software with the same version where is any bad data
in the FLASH where is the MCU software is stored.
Q: What’s PPM data?
A:
PPM data are block of data that define different groups of users, like language
groups.
Nokia made this format of data because of FLASH size limits.
Since there are a lot of languages and fonts over the world, in one PPM file
can be from 1- 20 languages. Changing the language is a main reason for changing
PPM data.
Also you can overwrite PPM package with the same version if you have bad
data in the FLASH where is PPM data stored.
Q: What’s a log?
A:
Some phones cannot be direct unlocked with the clip because of security reasons,
so it can log them with the PC to a file - with this file (called log, the
developer calculates the Simlock code)
Q: What sorts of simlock are there?
A:
Lock phone to SIM card. If your phone has simlock to the SIM you cannot use
any other SIM than the one you have: Therefore a broken SIM makes the phone
useless.
I. Simlock is a lock programmed into a mobile phone which only allows one
company's SIM to be used in the phone. The reasoning behind this is to keep
your custom to that network. Simlock is also referred to as SP Locks or Network
locks. Once your simlock is removed you can place any (dependent on phone
model) SIM card into it including foreign networks if you take the phone abroad.
II. Lock phone to Operator (Network or Service Provider). If your phone has
simlock to an operator, you can use any SIM from this operator in your phone.
You can switch between contract and prepaid as you wish, but not to a different
operator.
III. Lock phone to CODE (Product Lock or Offer Lock). If your phone has simlock
to a code, the phone checks a special "password" (GID) on the SIM
that must match your phone. Providers often use different passwords for contract
and prepaid.
So unlocking is: Removing simlock on the phone so you can use the phone with
any compatible SIM Card. Unlocking will allow you to use other service providers'
SIM card. For example if you have an ABC GSM phone you can only put in an
ABC SIM card, but if you unlock you can put in DEF XYZ, etc.
Q: How can I verify whether my phone has Simlock?
A:
If you place any card other than the one that the phone accepts, then you
will get A message such as 'Incorrect Card', 'SIM Card not accepted', 'Enter
Special Code', Enter NCK' or similar. So unlocking is tampering with the software?
- It can be, most programs to unlock on the internet change some data in the
phone software others just make a log and calculate simlock code. You will
have to type the unlock code with special code in your phone to unlock it.
Q: Now why should you upgrade your phone?
A:
I. To get rid of software bugs
II. To get new/extra functions
III. To improve existing features
Q: Why can't I open some shareware?
A:
It needs to use a normal unpacker, like winrar or winzip, but never the winace.
